Answer: the word impossible itself spells I'M POSSIBLE. for everything in the world will be possible and it will be with the help of your will power. our attitude determines how we work towards the impossible and achieve success.

      our mind has the ability to think the possibility of how we can do the work with possible attempts.

nothing is impossible in this world and if you have the desire to prove this you must have put great efforts to work on it. to attain the goal, you must smile in the distress times and leave it out of your mind because there are many politicians who have achieved great things by not hearing even a single word from what the enemies mock or blame of. even one of the great example is our prime minister, Narendra Modi.

faith and self-potential feeling will also help you get the positive attitude towards your hard work so that you can achieve success.

mind makes distinction between good and bad, happiness and sad, triumph and defeat. it rests entirely upon the minds whether to draw line a little towards this side or that. mind should be the haven of all good emotions of life. it is the temple of true love. it can hold more beauty the even nature itself

nothing is achieved without great enthusiasm and effort because the more you put your efforts on a particular work to achieve the more confidence you will get on yourself to achieve. so, work hard so that your will power will grow, and you can prove that nothing is impossible.  


2. "All we have to fear is fear itself'" Courage and optimism are two things that help that anyone survive the period of stress. Comment on the value of being courageous with reference to the chapter 'Deep Water'.

Answer: All we have to fear is fear itself.” Douglas has experienced both the sensation of dying and terror that fear of it can produce. The strong will, hard determination, courage and toil as well as honest labor win over all our terror and fears. The will to live brushes aside all our fears. In reality all our terrors and fears are psychological and the same can be won over.

1. Douglas says, "The experience had a deeper meaning for me". write its impact on him.

Answer: The drowning incident at the pool had many short and long-term consequences on Douglas. The short-term consequences such as weakness, trembling, sickness, haunting fear of water, etc.

As time elapsed, these consequences took the shape of more sinister and deeply ingrained fears. Douglas developed a perennial aversion to water; the very sight of a water body such as a lake, river, waterfall, etc. made him petrified. When he accompanied his friends to any picnic spot, he would stay on shore, while his friends enjoyed the water sports and recreational activities. Douglas felt terribly scared and bad about it. This humiliation gave birth to a strong desire to overcome his fear of water.





2. How did the swimming instructor build a swimmer out of Douglas?

Answer: 

William Douglas’s instructor had to devise various strategies to “build a swimmer” out of him. At first, he put a belt around him and tied a rope to it. The instructor held the other end of the rope and let it loose to let Douglas go inside water. They made numerous trips for around three months. The instructor then made him put his face under water and exhale, raise his nose and inhale. Next, the instructor held him at the side of the pool and made him kick his legs. He had to work on it numerous times to overcome his fear bit by bit.


3. How Did Douglas overcome his fear of water? or 
What lesson did Dauglas overcome his fear?
Answer: 

When Douglas grew up, he took the help of an instructor to learn swimming. His training went on from October to April. For three months he was taken across the pool with the help of a rope. As he went under, terror filled him and his legs froze. The instructor taught him to exhale under water and inhale through raised nose. He made him kick his legs to make them relax. Then he asked him to swim. He continued swimming from April to July. Still all terror had not left. He swam two miles across Lake Wentworth and the whole length to the shore and back of Warm Lake. Then he overcame his fear of water.


4. How did Douglas make sure that he conquered the old terror?
Answer: 

Douglas still felt terror-stricken when he was alone in the pool. The remnants of the old terror would return, but he would rebuke it and go for another length of the pool. He was still not satisfied. So, he went to Lake Wentworth in New Hampshire, dived off a dock at Triggs Island and swam two miles across the lake. He had his residual doubts. So, he went to Meade Glacier, dived into Warm Lake and swam across to the other shore and back. Thus, he made sure that he had conquered the old terror.


5.'I crossed to oblivion, and the curtain of life fell.' What was the incident which nearly killed Douglas and developed in him a strong aversion to water?

Answer: The incident which nearly killed Douglas occurred when he was ten or eleven years old. He had decided to learn swimming at the YMCA pool, and thus get rid of his fear of water. One morning, when he was alone at the pool, waiting for others, a big bully of a boy tossed him into the deep end of the pool. Though he had planned a strategy to save himself as he went down, his plan did not work. Thrice he struggled hard to come to the surface but failed each time. He was frightened and got almost drowned in the pool, lost his consciousness and felt that he would die. Though he was ultimately saved, this misadventure developed in him a strong aversion to water.

6. What happened at the YMCA swimming pool which instilled fear of water in douglas' mind?
Answer: 
A misadventure at the YMCA pool wherein Douglas was thrown into the deeper end of the pool by a big boy made Douglas afraid of water. He went down into the water three times but failed to come up. Though he was ultimately saved, a terror of water developed in him as his lungs filled with water. His head throbbed and his legs felt paralyzed thus making him fear water permanently.


7. The story "Deep water" has made you realize that with determination and perseverance one 
can accomplish the impossible. Write a paragraph in about 120-200 words on how a positive attitude and courage will aid you to achieve success in life.
 
Answer: 

Will power play a pivotal in the life of a human being. Determination and persistent hard work are the hallmarks of success. A person who has a passionate desire to do something achieves his goals within the stipulated time. There are numerous ways which lead to the desired goals. Will power of a human being gives him strength, energy, vigor and enthusiasm. It determines the fate of a human being. Absolute determination has the uncanny ability to face and overcome obstacles. No hindrance can defeat will power. It is invincible and insurmountable. A man who lacks enthusiasm will power and determination is like a ship which has no helm. It floats on the surface of water according to the wind. There is no problem in this world which has no solution. It has been proved by great personalities that all obstacles can be overcome by sheer determination. Man has the knack to achieve anything. Nothing is impossible in this world of science and technology. He must not be a fatalist. He should not believe in destiny but in karma. Man can accomplish every assignment if he desires. Strong desire is the prerequisite to success. There is no scope for disappointment in the life of a person who has an iron will and dogged determination. He puts in tremendous efforts to achieve greatness.



8. Desire, determination and diligence lead to success. Explain the value of these qualities in the light of Douglas' experience in " Deep Water".


Answer: The terror of water followed Douglas wherever he went. To get rid of it, he made a strong determination. He decided to overcome his fear though his 'will'. He engaged an instructor who perfected him in swimming. the instructor gave him hundreds of exercises and taught him to exhale and inhale in water. The practice went on for three months and Douglas was able to counter his terror. Then after more exercises, the instructor ordered him to dive. He swam across and back lakes. He had now completely lost his fear of water. His desire, determination and diligence had succeeded in banishing his fear of water.
